Many of today’s headphones don’t just pipe sweet sounds into your ears. They can also listen for and quiet outside disturbances that could distract you.
How does ANC work? In this guide, we’ll explain how noise-cancelling headphones and earbuds lower external ambient sounds, analyse if you should spend more for the technology, and look at the finest active noise cancellation solutions available currently.
What is ANC?
Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) reduces background noise. Microphones “listen” to sounds outside and within the earphone, an ANC chipset inverts the soundwaves, and a speaker inside the earphone cancels the outside sound by neutralizing soundwaves. +2 outside plus -2 inside equals zero.
ANC chipsets use either:
– A feed-forward ANC system has an earphone-mounted microphone
– A feed-back ANC system has an in-ear microphone
– A hybrid ANC system combines feed-forward and feed-back.
ANC types and settings
Noise-canceling headphones may have multiple uses. Choose a setting, mode, or noise cancellation type for your commute or relaxation.
Passive Noise Cancellation uses well-designed earcups to exclude noise. This is used for over-ear headphones and in-ear earphones to block outside noise.
Mics and speakers decrease background and ambient noises with Active Noise Cancellation. This type is most common in over-ear headphones. True wireless in-ear earphones are possible because to miniaturized and battery-efficient technology.
Adaptive Active Noise Cancellation adjusts microphones and speakers to your environment. This sort of ANC digitally responds to the environment.
Adjustable Active Noise Cancellation allows you manually modify background noise levels. This gives you full control.
Transparency Mode allows you tone out your audio without removing your earbuds.
Adjustable Transparency Mode lets you change how much of the outside world you want to pass through, without switching off your music.
Adjustable Own Voice lets you choose how much you hear your own voice on ANC calls, for example.
How do we test noise cancelling Headphones
Audio performance, battery life, Bluetooth range, call quality, comfort and fit, and noise cancellation are ranked for the finest noise-canceling headphones. Our reviews consider special features such included apps and their usability.
Our evaluators wear each pair of headphones for 2 hours a day for a week to measure comfort.
ANC is evaluated in high-noise indoor and outdoor conditions. This includes planes, parks, shops, workplaces, and transit. ANC headphones programmed with transparency modes are also tested thoroughly to determine how well the listener can hear their surroundings.
For sound quality, we listen to many different sample tracks and span as many music genres as possible, including hip-hop, rock, jazz, classical and R&B, while evaluating volume, clarity and fullness. Find out what we listen for during our testing process and how to get the best headphone sound for you.
Since more streaming music services offer high-resolution audio, check our audio codec FAQ to learn about FLAC, MP3, and more.
After testing, we grade headphones (1 = worst, 5 = best). If a product hits nearly every mark, it awarded an Editor’s Choice badge.
