The Razr 2022 outperforms the Z Flip 4 in four ways while falling short in two.

The Moto Razr 2022

It’s new foldable phone season, and a slew of new handsets have debuted within hours of each other. While Samsung’s new Galaxy Z Flip 4 is getting more attention, the Motorola Razr 2022 quietly outperforms its rival in a number of ways.

Do you enjoy playing Top Trumps on your smartphone? The Razr 2022 outperforms its main competitor in four categories, but falls short in two others. Because the Razr is currently only available in China, I’m only looking at the phones on paper.

About Refreshing Speed

Both phones have 6.7in screens, but the Razr 2022 is faster. 144Hz vs. 120Hz on Z Flip 4. Razr 2022 beats all foldable phones in this regard.

Charging Speed

The Razr 2022 can charge faster than Samsung and Motorola, and foldables focus on other tech.

Motorola’s 33W wired charging is faster than Samsung’s 25W. The Razr will be faster to charge.

Screen Display

I wish Motorola had made the Razr 2022’s outer screen 3in, but even at 2.7in it’s larger and more useful than Samsung’s.

The Z Flip 4’s 1.9in screen works well for basic info and notifications (based on the previous gen), but I’d rather have the Razr’s extra features.

Motorola has nine widgets, and more may be added later.

Camera Specs

I grouped the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4’s cameras into one section.

Ok, megapixels aren’t everything, but the Razr 2022’s selfie camera has 32Mp compared to the Flip 4’s 10Mp sensor, so I’d expect a quality difference.

It has a 50Mp main camera and 13Mp ultrawide. Motorola’s setup is ready to challenge Samsung’s dual 12Mp cameras.

Samsung Win back

I’m not saying the Razr 2022 is the obvious winner, even if it could win on price. It will launch in China and cost 5,999. At $890/£730, the Razr would undercut the Z Flip 4 if it launched in the West.

Samsung does win back some users in important ways. The Z Flip 4 is 13g lighter at 187g and is IPX8 waterproof, not just water-repellent.

Samsung’s OneUI is more polished, and the company provides excellent software support. Most new devices include four years of Android updates and five years of security patches. If so, the Z Flip 4 could run Android 16

Considering the nature of a foldable phone, I wouldn’t expect to use either the Razr or the Z Flip 4 for that long – mainly due to wear and tear on the hinge, which many Z Flip 3 owners have had issues with – but given the evidence on show, I’d rather fold a Razr into my daily usage this year.
