Sony’s Xperia 5 IV is a content-creating phone.
The Xperia 5 line is perfect for folks who adore the Xperia 1 series but can’t afford it. The Xperia 5 is a more cheap, compact alternative to Sony’s flagship handset, yet it still packs premium features. Sony unveiled the Xperia 5 IV today. Here’s what to anticipate.
Sony Xperia 5 IV Design
This model’s design is standard. Thin rectangular body with rounded edges. It contains a 3.5mm headphone jack, which is a good surprise because other companies are pulling these off.
Durability will be improved using Corning Gorilla Glass Victus, an upgrade from last year’s product. Dust and water resistance will be IP65/IP68. Sony said other brands just test for IP68; it tests for both. We’ve explained IP ratings if you’re unfamiliar.
Display
The Xperia 5 IV will sport a 6.1-inch, 21:9 display, like its predecessor. Similar to the Xperia 5 III, the display will be OLED and 120Hz. Sony promises the display will be 50% brighter, boast FHD+ resolution, and have real-time HDR.
Cameras
The Xperia 5 series held its own against the iPhone and Google’s Pixel phones. 16mm, 24mm, and 60mm 12MP back cameras are new this year. Front-facing 12MP camera can shoot 4K HDR video. The Xperia 5 III’s selfie camera was 8MP.
Cameras will also have:
- 120fps display
- Zeiss-coated
- Autofocus speedy (all lenses)
- Targeting (photo and video)
- 60fps AF/AE (all lenses)
- 20fps HDR bursts
- Camera shutter
- 4K 120fps, 5x slow-mo (all lenses)
- Hybrid picture stabilisation, wide dynamic range
Specs and Other features
The Sony Xperia 5 IV has a 6.1-inch FHD+ OLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate and Sony’s unique 21:9 aspect ratio. The smaller smartphone has Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 SoC, 8GB RAM, and 128GB storage.
The Xperia 5 IV has the same main and ultra-wide camera as the Xperia 1 IV, however it lacks the 3D iToF sensor. The 12MP triple camera configuration allows 4K 120fps video capture on all three cameras. The device can take 20fps photos with autofocus, auto exposure, and HDR. It sports a 12MP front-facing camera.
Xperia 5 IV’s smaller, lower-resolution display should help the 5,000mAh battery last long. Other features include 30W wired fast charging, wireless charging, an IP68 rating, and stereo speakers.
Sony crammed a microSD card slot and 3.5mm headphone socket into the Xperia 5 IV, which is astounding. We hope additional manufacturers copy Sony’s features. Given the proliferation of TWS earbuds and phones with 1TB of storage, it seems doubtful.
Connectivity options include USB Type-C, sub-6GHz 5G, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and NFC. Android 12 comes preinstalled on the tablet.
Release date and Price
Sony Xperia 5 IV will be available October 27 in a single RAM/storage configuration. Black, Ecru White, and Green will be available. The $999 gadget is pricier than the Zenfone 9. Sony’s tiny flagship has a better camera and larger battery. See if the $300 premium is worth it in our comprehensive review.
