Most people want the Galaxy Z Flip, not the Galaxy Z Fold. 70% of foldable clients chose clamshell, the business claimed. Z Flip phones are thinner, smaller, and less expensive than Galaxy Z Fold. While Google’s Android team grapples with larger-screened foldable, Samsung folded the smartphone UI for the Galaxy Z Flip 3.
Samsung is pushing foldable phones. With its fourth-generation Galaxy Z series, the Samsung improved foldable phones’ durability and usability. Thinner hinges and bezels are on the Samsung Z Flip 4 and Z Fold 4. Repairing their screens is cheaper.
In the US, a broken Galaxy Z Fold 3 screen used to cost $249 with a $11 per month Samsung Care+ plan. This year, Samsung will charge $29, the same as for slab-style Galaxy phones. Yes, you still need Samsung Care+, but that’s one way the business has reduced the cost of a foldable phone.
Samsung’s Z Flip 4 is similar to previous year’s model. Unlike the Fold series, which had design revisions for 2022, these are harder to spot. Samsung has optimized the Flip series’ form factor.
Samsung’s Unpacked lineup resembles 2021’s. Almost majority of the modifications are internal.
Changes include:

Samsung says the Flip 3’s internal display is 45% stronger, although we’re not sure how. You’ll receive the same 6.7-inch foldable Super AMOLED panel with 120Hz refresh rate. This year’s display crease is less obvious, but still visible. Samsung’s display has Gorilla Glass Victus Plus.
The Galaxy Z Flip 4 has mostly internal upgrades.
Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 is in the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 chipset. If you pre-order Samsung’s 512GB model, you’ll get double the capacity you pay for. You can trade in a smartphone for up to $900 off and a free silicone ring or strap case.
Bora Purple, Graphite, Pink Gold, and Blue for outside panels; black, silver, and gold for frame. Samsung’s Bespoke Edition offers 75 frame and front/back panel combinations.
New Camera features
Flip 4 cameras are similar to previous year’s. Dual 12MP primary cameras and 10MP selfie camera return. The Flip 3’s 12MP sensor has 1.8-micron pixels, making it 65% brighter. Stay tuned for our Galaxy Z Flip 4 low-light review.

The selfie camera’s software is updated. Quick Shot selfies can now be previewed on the Cover Screen. Change aspect ratios without opening the Flip 4. Samsung’s camera AI reduces shake and keeps details in focus.

Samsung’s “FlexCam” uses the Flip 4’s cameras in half-closed mode. This lets you set your phone down for a delayed group photo, vlogging, or hands-free streaming. FlexCam works with Instagram, WhatsApp, and Facebook while the Flip is half-opened.
The Flip 4’s 3,700mAh battery has 25W rapid charging (courtesy of an optional extra charger). You’ll gain 50% in 30 minutes. 10W+ Fast Wireless Charging 2.0 and reverse wireless charging are also included.
Samsung Z Flip 4 Software
Android 12 and One UI 4.1 are on the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4. Samsung promises 4 OS updates and 5 years of security patches. All Android OEMs should follow this update pledge, as we’ve said before.
External Cover Screen includes new features. These include quick settings, texting, unlocking a compatible car, calling, and using Samsung Wallet. New Smart Things Cover Screen widgets control linked devices.
The Flip 4 matches Galaxy devices. Your phone, watch, and tablet may now share themes. Custom clock widgets and video backdrops can be added to the Cover Screen. We’ll review how awesome this is.
In Flex Mode, the Flip 4’s bottom screen may be used as a touchpad. We’re not sure why you’d do this, but let’s go with it.
Samsung Z Flip 4 hands on takeaway
From our short experience with the Flip 4, we’re seeing many of the same features we enjoyed in the Flip 3 with a few improvements. We’ll see if that’s enough to keep it the world’s most popular foldable. When last year’s model was so outstanding, there’s only so much that can happen without raising the price.
