It has a 6.7-inch Super Retina XDR OLED display, 1290 x 2796 pixels, 120 Hz refresh rate, HDR10 certification, and Dolby Vision. The Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra boasts a 6.8-inch Dynamic AMOLED display, Quad HD+ resolution, 120 Hz refresh rate, HDR10+ certification, and S Pen functionality for handwriting and drawing. Face ID authenticates the iPhone, while the Samsung utilises an ultrasonic in-display fingerprint reader.
Camera and Hardware
The Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra has a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 or Exynos 2200 processor and 8GB or 12GB of RAM. No extendable storage, although you can get 1TB of built-in storage if you splurge. It has a top-of-the-line processor and plenty of RAM to handle anything you throw at it.
In an unexpected move, Apple is reserving the A16 Bionic processor for its Pro line while keeping the A15 from last year. Apple didn’t clarify if this is a response to the chip scarcity or just another tactic to differentiate the lines. Last year’s processor beat the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, and the A16 is superior. No one knows how much RAM the iPhones have, but performance has never been an issue.
iPhone 14 Pro phones have a few important additional features if you’re ever in a difficult scenario. The first is crash detection, which alerts emergency services, sends your location, and notifies your emergency contacts if you’re in a severe car accident. Lack of a cell connection shouldn’t prevent receiving help. Moreover, Apple’s new Emergency SOS via satellite capability notifies emergency responders of your location.
The Galaxy S22 Ultra’s 5,000mAh battery has good life given its power-hungry components. 6.5 hours of screen usage is easily a full day’s worth. If you have the right charger, it supports 45W rapid charging and 15W wireless charging.
We were thrilled by the iPhone 13 Pro Max’s battery life, so we expect more of the same. The biggest difference is an always-on display, which shouldn’t effect battery life. The iPhone 14 Pro Max battery is rated for 29 hours of video playback (23 hours for the smaller 14 Pro). Unfortunately, Apple hasn’t improved its charging. Changes were made to the camera. The iPhone 14 Pro Max has three cameras, however the main one is a 48MP sensor. The 12MP ultra-wide and telephoto lenses are also superior in low light. Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra cameras offer a new design but aren’t much different from its predecessor. Samsung vs Apple: Which should you buy? We ask this question twice a year whenever either company releases a new flagship. And the answer, as always, remains the same — it depends. These phones are the best their respective companies offer, so you can’t go wrong with either. It just depends on which ecosystem you want to be a part of. But making the jump from one to the other is a hard sell.
Both phones have robust ecosystems that make switching between the two harder
On the other side, Apple is seemingly shaking off years of lethargy with the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max. The “Dynamic Island” is intriguing, even if its usability is a little questionable. The camera upgrade is terrific and should make some of the best camera phones even better. But purely on the numbers side of things, 48MP won’t excite anyone in the Android world. And features like the always-on display and crash detection (Pixel phones have had this feature for years), while new for the iPhone, isn’t new for Android.
The one major point I’ll give Apple is the choice of size. However you can get the iPhone 14 Pro Max or the smaller iPhone 14 Pro without compromising on other features. Furthermore Samsung doesn’t give you the option with the Galaxy S22 Ultra. Moreover if you don’t get the Ultra, you’ll miss out on the camera, display resolution, RAM, and storage with the smaller S22 and S22 Plus.
