CAD images of a new charging case for the incoming second-generation AirPods Pro show speaker holes, a microphone, and a lanyard opening.
O’Hara couldn’t verify the renders’ veracity, but they match earlier speculations concerning the upcoming AirPods Pro charging case.
The new charging case will offer Find My, allowing users to track it in the app even without AirPods Pro. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo believed the case will generate a sound when misplaced, explaining the speaker holes.
Renders reveal a single hole for a microphone, but its use is unclear. One idea is that the microphone might be utilized for Apple’s accessibility function Live Listen, which can assist someone to hear a discussion in a busy setting or across a room. The case’s microphone might convey sound to the user’s AirPods Pro, amplifying it.
Last, the images reveal a cutout in the right side of the cover for a lanyard attachment. This functionality would make attaching an AirPods Pro case to a keychain easier.
Before, we could use wireless chargers or Apple’s MagSafe pucks. Apple Watch charging pads minimise the number of cables you need to bring on a vacation.
Apple’s Find My network works with the AirPods Pro 2 case. iPhones having an U1 chip (iPhone 11 and above) can receive accurate instructions, but if you don’t (like iPhone SE), you may still determine the overall location of the case and then remote-activate a new internal speaker.
You can now customise your AirPods Pro 2 case with a Memoji, in addition to engraving. Upload a Memoji to the Apple Store app.
AirPods Pro 2 can be preordered starting September 9 and will be released September 23. $249 each.
